Hi all, I've recently been seduced by the FlexMed program at Mount Sinai because it focuses on allowing humanities/social science majors to get into med school and allow them to continue to pursue their interests during college and before entering medical school. The applicants accepted are typically pretty unique, often having a huge demonstrated interest in another field (like computer science, entrepreneurship, etc). I would love to be considered for this program because without the pre-medical requirements, I could study abroad for a year instead of a semester, complete a senior philosophy thesis instead of MCAT prep, take elective courses like medical Spanish and genetics rather than classes I do not find much interest in like physics and organic chemistry, etc. I have worked as an orderly in the OR for about 200 hours, and volunteered at a special needs camp for young adults with Down syndrome for about 160 hours, and another summer camp for an individual with Down syndrome for 280 hours. It sounds like you have cool and interesting things you'd like to pursue in lieu of the time you'd otherwise spend doing standard pre-med stuff, and I think that's exactly what they're looking for. It dropped from 4.2 to 3.5 since I basically stopped going to school for a few months after what happened. It would be an amazing program, but I do not know if it is a possibility due to my state at a mid/bottom-tier school (SDSU) and lack of an impressive HS transcript. I went through a traumatic experience in high school so my GPA was not stellar (3.7ish weighted). If you had stellar stats your senior year and thought you could “trade up” schools with the normal cycle you can do so. Is the application due during sophomore year or junior? Despite my pleas in my personal essays, due to this unimpressive high school run and me not being able to apply to any private universities, I am now at a large state school; I read that early assurance for med school typically only takes ivy's/UCB/UCLA/other top rated undergrads. If you want to apply, then I would definitely make sure that you maintain atleast a 3.85 (i believe that was their median), and I think their avg SAT score was around 2200ish. We encourage our FlexMed students to take time off between graduation and matriculation at the Icahn School of Medicine to further explore your academic and professional interests.
